“My Life as a Dog” Screening and Book Club

“My Life as a Dog” (“Mitt Liv Som Hund”) is a Swedish film directed by Lasse Hallström, released in 1985. The story is set in the 1950s and follows the life of a young boy named Ingemar, played by Anton Glanzelius. Ingemar is sent to live with relatives in the countryside after his mother becomes too ill to care for him. The film explores Ingemar’s adventures and misadventures as he navigates the challenges of growing up, dealing with loss, and finding his place in the world. Through his experiences and imaginative coping mechanisms, including comparing his situation to that of Laika, the Soviet space dog, Ingemar learns to deal with his troubles and embrace life’s unpredictabilities.
