Monte Pride, a Michigan-native singer-songwriter and fingerstyle guitarist, is known for his evocative blend of folk music that draws comparisons to the delicate vocal harmonies of Simon & Garfunkel, and the intricate guitar work reminiscent of The Tallest Man On Earth and early Joni Mitchell. His music, characterized by haunting melodies and vivid lyricism set against electric, ambient soundscapes, creates lush, experimental folk songs that resonate with listeners. Pride’s work is deeply rooted in the folk tradition, yet incorporates modern elements that give his sound a unique, contemporary edge.
Monte Pride’s latest album, “Even in Absence,” released on August 21, 2020, was eagerly anticipated after being postponed from its original April 2020 release due to the COVID-19 pandemic. This album is a collection of healing songs that underscore the persistence of experience, relationships, and love, even in the absence of physical presence. The themes of loss and resilience, trial and growth, are central to the album, with Pride’s rich tenor voice and accomplished fingerstyle guitar technique taking center stage. The album was a collaborative effort, featuring contributions from many Michigan artists, including Sam Cooper, Brandon & Bethany Foote (Gifts or Creatures), and others, with early production help from Timothy Monger. Pride’s sophomore effort showcases his expanded artistic vision, with inspiration drawn from both 60s and contemporary folk influences, including Nick Drake, Paul Simon, and Gillian Welch, as well as Michigan artists like Red Tail Ring and May Erlewine.
Pride has supported notable Michigan artists such as Joshua Davis and Luke Winslow King and has performed at various music festivals and concert series across the state, including Wheatland Music Festival and Earthwork Harvest Gathering.
