Lansing Symphony Orchestra

July 8  \  8:03 pm

The Lansing Symphony Orchestra (LSO) has been captivating audiences since its inception in 1929. Under the leadership of Music Director Timothy Muffitt, the LSO has embraced both classical and contemporary music, often blending the two to create a unique and enriching experience for its audience.

A key aspect of the LSO’s recent programming has been its emphasis on new music. The 2023-24 season, for instance, showcased this commitment with each of its five MasterWorks concerts featuring a major new work alongside classical treasures from composers like Beethoven, Rachmaninoff, and Mozart. This innovative approach not only brings fresh sounds to the concert hall but also supports living composers, adding a vibrant and modern dimension to the orchestra’s repertoire.

The LSO’s Composer-in-Residence program further illustrates this commitment to contemporary music. Patrick Harlin, one of the recent composers in this role, contributed moving works such as “Bloom,” “River of Doubt,” and “Earthrise,” which were received with great enthusiasm by the audience. This initiative underlines the LSO’s role as an active participant in today’s musical creativity, involving both the musicians and the audience in the unfolding of modern musical narratives.

In addition to its regular concert series at venues like the Wharton Center for Performing Arts, the LSO also organizes a variety of special events. One of the notable events is the annual Black & White Ball, a premier gathering at The University Club of MSU featuring gourmet dinner, drinks, a live and silent auction, and, of course, fantastic music. This event, among others, plays a crucial role in sustaining the LSO as one of the area’s key cultural assets.

The LSO’s educational and community engagement programs are also a testament to its commitment to enriching lives through music. These initiatives include family series concerts, LSO Kids programs, PreView Conversations, a side-by-side student orchestra, and the Young People’s Concert: Link Up, all designed to nurture a love of music in people of all ages.

The LSO’s blend of classical and contemporary music, along with its community engagement and special events, make it a pivotal cultural institution in Lansing. Its dedication to both honoring musical traditions and forging new paths in the world of music is a significant contribution to the city’s cultural landscape
